Could it be possible that the best 2012 concert in DFW happened in the first month of the New Year? Last night, Mutemath played a sold out show at Dallas #1 music venue, the House of Blues. The crowd was full of kerosene and dynamite as the band surprised everyone by entering from the back of the house, then traversing the audience in marching band formation, drums and all, to the stage. Like much of the night, Mutemath caught everyone off guard.
Mutemath’s fall release, Odd Soul, was my favorite album of 2011. Hearing it live brings the listener a multi-layered sonic- satisfaction. The bands New Orleans roots are endemic to their level of musicianship mastery. Whether they are playing old or new songs, jazz, rock-n-roll, the blues or electronic Mutemath is the top of their field. There is no denying. These guys are some of the best out there. The crowd didn’t stop moving the entire two and a half hours they played. You can’t help it. Mutemath is a groove machine. When the piper plays you have to follow.
Mutemath began the show in the crowd and they spent as much time in the center of the fray as on stage. These boys love to be in the middle of their fans. Whether they are walking, crowd surfing, floating on a brightly illuminated blow up mattress, or standing above the crowd on a suspended piece of flooring, Mutemath strives transform the whole venue into one big stage. We are all participants in the show. We are all Odd Souls.
It’s only the beginning of 2012 but it is hard to imagine that there will be a better concert this year. If you can catch the Odd Soul tour, Mutemath is a must-see must-hear must-feel must-dance extravaganza.
